Retiring a Flag

Today Jackson lived a 7 year old boys' dream - - - playing with fire sans any fear of getting in trouble. Newman Elementary offers a Tiger Cub Scout program to their 1st and 2nd graders. Jacks has been blissfully participating and recruiting any and all who seem even remotely interested. Today he, his buddy Brayden, and the rest of the Tiger Cubbies had the "way cool" opportunity to retire a flag. Under the ever watchful scouting eye of Beverly Ouzts, they ceremonied to their hearts content as they cut the flag into it's stripes, said some "weird words" and placed each stripey strip onto the flame. I asked Jackson how it felt to burn an American flag and after a brief pause and a roll of the eyes he said, "Well duh mom, it was hot."
